The Bostic Kindergarten program is both academically and

behaviorally challenging. It is a program of choice and is not for

everyone. It may be right for your child!

There are no academic prerequisites for entering the program. However, students who have attended preschool and received experience with writing and cutting are at an academic advantage. At Bostic Kindergarten Round-Up in May, the Kindergarten teachers provide the new student with individualized handwriting sheets printed with the child’s name. These are for summer practice. In the fall, as soon as students master correct form and line placement, they no longer need to write their names for homework. This cuts homework by half.

If you are considering this program for your child, please carefully consider the following:

1.    Can I support a program that has very high expectations in both academics and behavior?

2.   Is my child able to sit for long periods of time and maintain the attention span required to focus on material that is rigorous and challenging? Students who have trouble sitting still for long periods of time or have trouble following directions typically do not do well in this program.

3.   Is my child mature enough to handle the rigors of the program? History has shown that boys with summer birthdates and girls with late summer birthdates struggle with the rigors of this program and are often candidates for retention in the fall. Therefore, we cannot recommend the Bostic kindergarten program for boys with summer birthdates. If you have a boy with a summer birth-date and are considering this program, please contact the school for ideas and options for your child prior to enrolling at Bostic.

4.  What if my child qualifies for ESOL services? Currently these services are not available at Bostic. Students who qualify for this service typically struggle in this program. If your child is tested and qualifies for this service, the district recommends that the student attend a school where s/he can benefit from these services. This is also our recommendation. The student may then apply to Bostic when s/he is no longer in need of the services.

5.  Will my child be comfortable in a disciplined setting and will I, as a parent, support a program with high standards of discipline? Respect and responsibility are founding principles of the school. Students are expected to show respect for authority, property, peers, and themselves.

If after thoughtful consideration of the above, you feel your child is ready for the rigors of the kindergarten program at Bostic, we recommend that you:

-Visit with the kindergarten teachers at the district’s yearly Choices Fair.

-Then visit the school during Magnet Visitation week.

Thank you for your interest in the program!
